One Of The Best Scenic Colorado Fall Drives
Aug 17, 2024
Nature puts on a spectacular show in the Colorado Rocky Mountains as summer turns to fall. One of the most exciting drives is along Highway 550 which includes two well-known sections, the San Juan Skyway and the Million Dollar Highway. This scenic drive will take you between Durango, Silverton, and Ouray, three must-see historic mountain towns with several mountain passes along the way.

Weminuche Wilderness, San Juan Mountain Range, CO
The last time we did this drive was in early October 2020, when the fall colors had just peaked and leaves had started to fall but the colors were still glorious and rich. A great way to conquer this section of Highway 550 is to start from Durango and stay there the night before heading north. Durango is a charming Western town with a bustling main street filled with shops, restaurants, and plenty of places to stay. Approximate drive times are six and a half hours from Denver, three and a half hours from Grand Junction, and five hours from our home base in Breckenridge.
Leaving Durango on the San Juan Skyway you will head North to Silverton and head over Coal Bank Pass. This Mountain pass reaches its summit at 10,640 feet and is filled with valley views, sheer cliffs, and sharp corners but is paved and has a lot of areas to pull off to the side to take some photographs. Almost every new turn has a painted mountainside filled with gold, orange, and red hues. It can be spectacular.

Old Mine on Highway 550
Next, you will drive over Molas Pass where the summit at 10,899 feet is a perfect relaxing place for a break. The viewpoint there can be crowded but there are dirt roads to head away from the crowds and there is a beautiful lake with plenty of places to soak it all in. The lake can have the most beautiful reflections of the San Juan Mountains and evergreen trees and is often enjoyed by kayakers and folks on stand-up paddle boards. I tend to relax the most here and play with our dog in the lake or toss his toy, because Mike is often gone for long stretches taking a bunch of pictures.

As you descend into the small town of Silverton take note of its mining past, the Victorian homes, and learn about the history of the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. There is a certain uniqueness about Silverton, the buildings are well preserved and there are many places to stop for souvenirs and quick bites to eat. We always drive off the main road onto the side streets where you can really see the historic architecture and old town charm at its finest. Mike loves the train and is always hoping he can time it right so we see it rolling into or out of town, I love the little shops!

The Town of Silverton
Now you get to head farther north on what is known as the scariest part of the Million Dollar Highway over Red Mountain Pass. It’s an intimidating, narrow road without guardrails but filled with expansive views, unlike anything you will see. There is a 4,100-foot elevation gain peaking at 11,018 feet and is filled with switchbacks and sheer cliffs, but worth the fear in every way. Add in the amazing fall foliage and you are on one of the best Colorado Fall drives.

The Town of Ouray
The quaint town of Ouray, also known as the American Alps and the Little Switzerland of America, is one of our favorite places to visit. Nestled in Box Canyon, the rugged peaks surrounding you are sky-high creating the most surreal natural beauty. The historic buildings are filled with charm combining the Old West with Victorian homes. This is a wonderful place to end your day of exploring where you can soak in the town's Hot Spring Pools and take in some fine dining. We always love the quiet mornings there, enjoying a hot coffee and walking around while most of the town is sleeping. There many great places for breakfast, too.
